In the diverse landscape of food preferences, clear communication on the nature of food products becomes crucial for consumers adhering to specific dietary choices.

The regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Act mandate explicit declarations for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods.

Let’s unravel the specifics of these declarations.

1. Declaration for Non-Vegetarian Foods

Symbol and Colour Code:

  • Non-vegetarian foods containing ingredients, including animal-derived additives and processing aids, must bear a declaration using a specific symbol and colour code.
  • The symbol comprises a brown-filled triangle inside a square with a brown outline.
  • The size of the symbol must adhere to the minimum specified in the regulation.

2. Declaration for Vegetarian Foods

Symbol and Colour Code:

  • Vegetarian foods containing ingredients, including plant-origin additives and processing aids, must have a distinctive declaration using a specific symbol and colour code.
  • The symbol consists of a green-filled circle inside a square with a green outline.

3. Prominent Display on Packages

Prominent Display:

  • The declaration regarding vegetarian or non-vegetarian status must be prominently displayed on the package.
  • The symbol, with a contrast background, should be on the principal display panel, close in proximity to the name or brand name of the product on the front of the pack.

4. Additional Display Requirements

Extended Display:

  • Declarations regarding vegetarian or non-vegetarian status are not limited to packaging alone.
  • They must also be prominently displayed on pamphlets, leaflets, and advertisements across various media platforms.

5. Exemptions from Declarations
