All India Drugs Control Officers’ Confederation (AIDCOC) has made a representation to Govt of India requesting to include Drugs Control Officers as Frontline Workers and vaccinate them in the first phase of vaccination drive.
Dr. Jayanta Kr. Chaudhury, AIDCOC President has told that they have pointed out the following points regarding the work done by Drugs Control Officer amid C-19 pandemic while representing to the Govt of India requesting to include Drugs Control Officers from CDSCO and all the States of India as Frontline Workers and vaccinate them in the first phase of vaccination drive:
The Drug Regulators are constantly thriving to ensure safety, efficacy and quality of medical products manufactured, imported & distributed in the country in order to ensure the safety, rights and wellbeing of the patients.
The drug regulators (both Central and State) are engaged in auditing various Manufacturing & Testing facilities of Allopathic drugs, Vaccine & Sera, Medical Devices, Medical Oxygen, Cosmetics, Blood Centres (Banks) & CROs.
In addition to the above we are involved in Licensing and Controlling functions / Inspections of more than 8 Lakh retail and wholesale pharmacies across the country.
In pursuit of their responsibilities, we worked round-the-clock since day one of the lockdown measure enforced by the Government in March 2020 and actively engaged in Inspections / Licensing of manufacturing facilities, Clearing Import & Export Consignment in a fast track mode to see that the Vaccines, Re Purposed drugs used in the treatment of C-19, Sanitisers, Disinfectants, Medical Oxygen, Masks & PPE kits, and other Medical Devices are available to the people in this pandemic situation.

We also worked tirelessly with the dealers and suppliers to maintain an uninterrupted supply chain of the drugs and allied medical products to the people of the nation.
In doing so, they were exposed to the C-19 virus like doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other frontline workers. Many of the officers and supporting staff tested C-19 positive and lost the lives of their dear ones in spite of the precautions taken and we continue to discharge the duties every day in very alarming & strenuous conditions.
Thus, the Drug regulators across the nation played a key role in delivering many of the government’s key support measures to the population, as frontline warriors in this C-19 virus pandemic period and have accomplished an incredible job of ensuring the availability and accessibility of C-19 drugs and other essential & lifesaving medicines while taking actions against unscrupulous and black marketers of C-19 drugs, overcoming all the odds.
We sincerely welcome the decision of the Union Government and thank you for your determined and unrelenting endeavor in rolling out the C-19 vaccination drive across the country from January 16, 2021 with priority given to nearly three crore healthcare and frontline workers after two vaccine candidates are being approved for restricted emergency use by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on January 3rd 2021.
In this context, we request you to use your good offices to get officers of the State Drugs Control departments and those of CDSCO (around 3000 officers across the nation) included in the list of frontline workers and give us the privilege of being vaccinated along with them on priority manner in the first phase of the vaccination drive so that regulatory officers can feel appreciated for the services rendered by them during these most difficult and challenging times and it reinvigorate the confidence levels in the discharge of duties more effectively and confidently.
It should be appreciate that the drugs control officers have been providing yeoman service ever since the announcement of lockdown and will continue to provide services as a duty bound government officials during the entire process of vaccination drive in close coordination with other departments maintaining strict monitoring & surveillance and thereafter.
