Panaji: Director of food and drugs administration (FDA) Jyoti Sardesai appealed to consumers to stay alert while consulting doctors, purchasing medicines, and completing an antibiotic course.
“Ensure that you buy medicines from licensed medical stores.” Don’t self-medicate. Ask for the bill and don’t self-medicate.
When you go to the doctor, ensure that he/she is a registered medical practitioner / authorized medical practitioner. Don’t go to quacks,” she said.
If antibiotics are prescribed, one must finish the course, Sardesai said.
“Normally after three days one feels better and may save the medicine for the next time. Don’t do that. This harms the body and will lead to antibiotic resistance,” she said.
Sardesai added that medicines prescribed for one person should not be taken by another.
With regard to food products whose shelf life is less than seven days, the manufacturer can print only the best before date, she said.
Sardesai was speaking at the State Consumer Rights Day celebrations held at Ravindra Bhavan on Monday.
