A team from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Haryana raided Punhana, District Mewat, and recovered a large quantity of drug-abused codeine phosphate syrup (i.e., cough syrup containing codeine, a component of opium).
Giving information in this regard, Amandeep Chauhan, Drugs Control Officer, FDA Haryana, said that the accused, Jamshed alias Mulla Champat, was found selling this drug to the youngsters in the area.
It is being said that this drug falls under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act).
Chauhan said, ‘The department raided on the basis of secret information and found that Jamshed alias Mulla Putra Haji Hassi, through his Kirana shop in Punhana, sold drug-abused drugs to the youth at a price higher than the MRP and ruined the younger generation.’
He said that the total quantity recovered was 11,100 ml and the total active ingredient (codeine phosphate) was 22.2 grams, which is more than the minimum quantity.
There is a provision for imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of one lakh rupees for illegally possessing and selling the NDPS drugs.
Apart from this, there is a provision of 7 years imprisonment under the Essential Commodities Act 1955 for selling at more than the prescribed price.
An FIR has been lodged against the culprit at the police station Punhana.
