The Indian government is on the hunt for a new leader to oversee the country’s drug regulatory body, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO).

The current Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, is set to step down in February 2025.

To fill this crucial role, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a call for applications.

Qualified candidates from both within and outside the government can apply for the DCGI position at CDSCO on a deputation basis.

Eligibility Criteria for DCGI Post

The government has outlined a stringent set of qualifications for the DCGI position. Applicants must possess:

  • A graduate degree in pharmacy, pharmaceutical chemistry, medicine (with a specialization in clinical pharmacology or microbiology), or a related field from a recognized Indian university.
  • A postgraduate degree in pharmacy, pharmaceutical chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or pharmacology is preferred.
  • At least 15 years of experience in drug manufacturing, testing, or enforcement of drug regulations.
  • Desirable qualifications include a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences and experience in drug standardization, control, import/export, and regulatory administration.

Candidates must also be below 58 years of age as of the application deadline.

The Role of the DCGI

The DCGI is a pivotal figure in India’s healthcare landscape.

They are responsible for:

  • Ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of drugs in the country.
  • Approving new drugs and medical devices for the Indian market.
  • Monitoring drug adverse effects and taking necessary actions.
  • Representing India in international drug regulatory forums.

The appointment of a suitable candidate for this position is crucial for maintaining public health and safety.

The Search for a New Leader

The process of selecting a new DCGI is expected to take several months.

The government will carefully evaluate applications and conduct interviews to find the most qualified individual for the job.

The new DCGI will inherit a challenging role, with increasing pressure to balance public health concerns with the needs of the pharmaceutical industry.
