Pharmacy Graduates
The Association of Pharmacy Teachers of India (APTI) is set to pass a resolution demanding the reservation of all job positions in pharmaceutical industries exclusively for pharmacy graduates and diploma holders.
This move aims to address the growing issue of unemployment and underemployment among pharmacy professionals in India.
The resolution will be presented at the annual general body meeting (APTICON 2024) scheduled for the 27th and 28th of this month in Bhubaneswar.
APTI’s Resolution
Prof. Dr. Somejeet Panda, President of the Odisha state branch of APTI, will introduce the resolution at the first plenary session.
According to Dr. Panda, despite the abundance of pharmacy graduates and diploma holders, many pharmaceutical companies continue to hire science graduates for various positions, leaving limited opportunities for pharmacy professionals.
Specific Demands
Reservation of Key Positions:
APTI argues that pharmacy graduates should be appointed to all key positions in the pharmaceutical industry, including:
- Pharma Manufacturing
- Quality assurance (QA),
- Quality control (QC),
- R&D,
- Purchase,
- Sale,
- Distribution and
- Marketing.
Recognition of Pharmacy Teaching Profession:
The association also seeks recognition for the pharmacy teaching profession, which is heavily dependent on the private sector.
They urge the government to provide financial assistance to private pharmacy teachers and ensure their due recognition.
Industry Response
While APTI’s demands are understandable, the pharma industry has expressed reservations.
M Rajaratinam, Managing Director of MMC Healthcare, acknowledged the need to create more opportunities for pharmacy professionals but emphasized that reserving all positions exclusively for them is impractical.
He explained that while pharmacy graduates are essential for roles like manufacturing, QA, and QC, other positions require a broader range of skills and expertise.
APTICON 2024
The 27th annual general body meeting of APTI, APTICON 2024, is expected to be a significant event for the pharmacy community.
With over 2000 participants, including 500 from the northeastern and eastern states, the conference will provide a platform for discussions on various aspects of pharmacy education and practice.
