The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has just reconstituted the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) vide notification No. S.O. 1159(E) dated 12-03-2025.

This is an important step towards how the nation will approach drug safety and efficacy.

A Look at the Constitution

The recent notification, dated March 12th, marks a pivotal moment, replacing the 18-member committee that had been in place since October 18, 2021.

Previously, the DTAB was reconstituted in May 2018.

The core structure remains, with the Director General of Health Services, New Delhi, serving as the ex-officio chairman.

However, the changes have been made by the inclusion of new state drug regulators and industry representatives.

Key Additions

State drug regulators from Goa and Himachal Pradesh have been included in place of state regulators from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Other key figures have been included from the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IP Alliance) and the Indian Pharmaceutical Association.

State Collaboration:

The inclusion of state regulators from Goa and Himachal Pradesh will add their regional expertise.

Industry Collaboration:

The addition of representatives from the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance and the Indian Pharmaceutical Association will increase the importance of industry input.

Legal Framework: The Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940

The reconstitution of the DTAB operates within the framework of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

According to Section 5 of this act, nominated and elected members serve for three years and are eligible for re-nomination or re-election, provided they maintain their original office.
