Jaipur: The regional office of department of revenue intelligence (DRI), Jaipur on Thursday arrested six persons in connection with the illegal export of banned psychotropic drugs worth nearly Rs six to seven crore.

The sleuths seized nearly 1.55 lakh units of the drug used in tablet form and have registered a case under appropriate sections of the NDPS Act against the accused. Primary investigation suggested that the banned drugs were to be exported to United States of America (USA).

Acting on specific inputs, the sleuths of DRI raided places in Jaipur, Kishangarh and New Delhi and arrested six persons in this connection.

“It was found that this drug which can’t be used without proper medical prescription was being smuggled by concealing them in handicraft items such as lamps to countries like USA. We have arrested two persons from Naseerabad (Ajmer) and four persons from Jaipur. 81,000 units of the tablets were seized from Jaipur; 13,000 from Naseerabad and 61,000 units were seized from Delhi,” said a senior officer of DRI, Jaipur on condition of anonymity.

Investigation further suggested that these drugs work as anti-depressants and are given to patients for anxiety or sleep deprivation. “It can’t be sold without medical prescription. However, our seizure which is around 1.55 lakh units, suggested that there is a big nexus working in the smuggling of these drugs,” an official said.
