Our lungs play an important role by providing oxygen to the body and removing harmful carbon dioxide from it.

It is important to take care of your lungs in times of C-19 virus as any pre-existing lung condition can make you susceptible to C-19.

Here are home care tips to keep your lungs in perfect shape, by Dr Sailee Modi, Ayurveda Consultant, Vedicure Healthcare and Wellness.

From eating healthy, consuming herbs, taking steam, and doing breathing exercises, here are 11 tips to take care of your lungs in times of C-19 virus pandemic.

Herbal tea: A wonderful immunity booster and excellent for your lung health, herbal tea can be prepared at home by mixing all dry herbs like dry ginger, black pepper, cardamomn and peppermint dried leaves. Having this tea daily is very good for health.

Golden milk: Boil 1/4tsp of turmeric in one glass of cow milk for 3-4 minutes and consume it.

Most of us just add turmeric in hot milk instead of boiling it but it’s important to give it a nice boil for best results.

Golden milk has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, which are known to help clear respiratory tract.

Inhaling steam: To open your airways and drain out mucus, taking steam is extremely beneficial. You can add ajwain to hot water for clearing lungs.

Herbs: You can consume the powder of herbs like tulsi, pippali, jesthamadh and vasa twice a day in lukewarm water.

Seasonal Fruits: Citrus fruits like grapes, oranges, pineapple, apple, pomogranate being powerhouse of antioxidants and nutrients help to build immunity.

Vegetables: Consume pumpkin, carrots, leafy vegetables, ginger, onion, garlic to boost your overall immunity.

Chywanprash: Have 1 tbsp Chywanprash daily in the morning.

Avoid these: Avoid oily, fatty, junk food, bakery products and heavy foods that can upset your body’s metabolism.

Exercise: Exercise is the food for lungs. We just need some sort of exercise to make easy flow of airway in the lungs.

You can walk or jog for 15 minutes in a day even when you are not getting out of your home.

Deep breathing : Deep breathing exercises like Brahmari pranayam, Bhastrika pranayam, Anulom vilom pranayam, Kapalbhati pranayam strengthen your lungs.

Nasya: Instilling medicated nasal drops in both nostrils making nasal defense system strong and active by preventing infection from going further into the lungs.
