Auro Pharma is recalling certain lots of Losartan tablets due to the presence of an azide impurity, Health Canada says.
The drug is used to treat chronic heart failure, kidney disease in diabetics, high blood pressure strokes. An azide impurity can alter the DNA of a cell.
The company is recalling seven lots of losartan 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg tablets after testing revealed the presence of an azide impurity above the acceptable level.
Long-term exposure may increase the risk of cancer, Health Canada said in a news release.
Health Canada recommends that users continue to take the medication unless the provider has advised them to stop.
“There is no immediate risk to patients taking these drugs, as the increased risk of cancer is related to long-term exposure. It may be riskier to your health to not treat your condition,” the agency says.
