New Delhi: According to official sources, the Union Health Ministry will probably take severe action against the E-pharmacies’ drug abuse, including shutting them down.
According to sources speaking to news agency ANI, “The E- Pharmacies are currently following that business model which can be problematic for patients who are ordering medicine online, their data privacy at risk, and the possibility of drug misuse.”
The Drugs Controller General India (DCGI) has issued show-cause letters to online pharmacies that sell drugs illegally.
On February 8, DCGI sent show-cause notices to online pharmacies and platforms, requesting a response within two days or facing swift action on the country’s drug sales and distribution without further warning.
The Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 is being broken by online pharmacies, according to official sources from the Union Health Ministry.
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) issued show-cause notices to over 20 online pharmacies and online platforms, which include some big players in the industry.
“The All Indian Origin Chemists and Distributors (AIOCD) was constantly urging the Central Government that the Drug Act, Pharmacy Act, and other drugs-related rules, orders, and codes of ethics do not permit the sale of medicines on the internet and the promotion of drug sales through advertising with discounts and schemes as it can be hazardous to the public’s health,” the AIOCD said in a statement.
“Despite all legitimate appeals, requests, meetings, and orders from the Delhi High Court, corporate houses were engaging in predatory pricing while operating illegally and with financial clout.”
“More dangerous is that since e-pharmacies began operating online sales of drugs across state borders in the country, a sudden increase in duplicate and spurious drugs has been seen,” the AIOCD added.
Additionally, it claimed that access to sedatives, antibiotics, pregnancy test kits, and narcotics via online apps made it difficult for state FDAs to trace and track their interstate patient supply.
The online pharmacies also produce their own data, according to AIOCD.
“AIOCD has always highlighted all burning issues that these illegal E-Pharmacies are producing their own Health data on their portal, which is also a threat as to the exposure of personal health data and it’s also against the PM health data policy of NHRM,” the organization said.
