Antibiotics for seasonal cold, cough

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has cautioned against the use of antibiotics to treat seasonal cold and cough.

The IMA recommends symptomatic treatment instead of antibiotics, as antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections.

The IMA cited the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), which states that fever that goes away at the end of three days with persisting cough for up to three weeks are mostly cases of H3N2 influenza virus.

Symptomatic treatment for cold and cough:

The IMA suggests symptomatic treatment, which aims to alleviate symptoms such as cough, fever, body aches, and vomiting.

Symptomatic treatment may include medical therapy or medication that targets the symptoms of the infection.

Diagnosing bacterial infections:

The IMA also recommends that physicians should diagnose whether the infection is bacterial or not before prescribing antibiotics.

Overuse of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance, making them ineffective in treating infections.

Misuse of antibiotics:

According to the IMA, several antibiotics are being prescribed by physicians even when they are not required.

For instance, the medical body notes that around 70% of diarrhea cases are viral, but physicians still prescribe antibiotics for such conditions.

The most misused antibiotics include:

  • Amoxicillin,
  • Norfloxacin,
  • Ciprofloxacin,
  • Ofloxacin,
  • Levofloxacin.

These antibiotics are often prescribed for diarrhea and urinary tract infections, even when they are not necessary.

Conclusion:

The IMA recommends that patients should avoid taking antibiotics for seasonal cold and cough without a proper diagnosis.

Antibiotics should only be used when necessary to avoid the development of antibiotic resistance.
