Odisha’s inputs lead to UP STF seizing spurious medicines worth Rs 7.3 crore

A special task force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh has seized fake medicines worth Rs 7.3 crore from a man named Ashok Kumar of Bulandshahr, with inputs from Odisha.

The state health authorities announced his arrest. The trader’s supply of counterfeit medicines was previously discovered in Jharsuguda and Bargarh districts of Odisha.

Seizure of counterfeit medicines

The state health department of Odisha had provided inputs to Uttar Pradesh while a team from Odisha had visited there.

After conducting the raid, the UP STF apprehended Ashok Kumar from a house in Varanasi’s Sigra police station area.

During his interrogation, he confessed about another godown under Lahartara police station. Following this, the STF raided the godown and seized a massive amount of fake drugs.

Details of the raid and seizure

Cash worth Rs 4 lakh was also found on the premises.

According to the state government’s official statement released on Thursday, all counterfeit drugs seized from Bargarh and Jharsuguda districts by the Odisha STF were recovered from Ashok Kumar’s residence.

The raids exposed one of the biggest fake drug rackets in recent times.

Cooperation sought by Odisha from Uttar Pradesh

On February 17, Odisha’s health secretary Shalini Pandit wrote to her Uttar Pradesh counterpart Aparna U, seeking cooperation for investigating an inter-state racket of spurious medicines that was found to have links with Varanasi.

Team assigned for the investigation

A team of assistant drugs controllers Sudarsan Biswal, Tushar Ranjan Panigrahi, and Dharmadev Puhan were assigned for the UP job.

Action taken by Odisha’s Drugs Enforcement Squad

The state government took action after the Drugs Enforcement Squad constituted by Odisha found that two dealers of fake drugs in Bargarh and Jharsuguda districts had transacted with medicine dealers from Varanasi.

Complaint filed against a medicine store owner and suppliers

On January 17, the health department lodged a complaint against a medicine store owner of Bargarh and three suppliers from Varanasi for supplying counterfeit drugs in the state. Police arrested Sunil Agrawal of Bargarh in this regard.

FIR lodged against a store proprietor and suppliers

The next day, the enforcement squad filed an FIR against one Amit Kumar Sarawgi, proprietor of another store in Jharsuguda, and two suppliers from Varanasi.
