Pharmacopoeia standards

The Pharmacopoeia Commission of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) is planning to develop pharmacopoeia standards for Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homoeopathy drugs during the financial year 2023-24.

As part of its “One Herb One Standard” (OHOS) initiative, the PCIM&H will undertake the development of standards for various drugs.

The Ministry of Ayush is also considering enacting legislation for the regulation of Yoga and Naturopathy, as well as legislation for Ayush Pharmacy and Allied Healthcare Professions.

Initiatives Planned by the Ministry of Ayush

The Ministry of Ayush has proposed various initiatives during 2023-24, including:

  • Development of research and treatment infrastructure
  • Development of a web portal for selling of soft copies of Pharmacopoeial Monographs as per GIGW (Guidelines for Indian Government Websites)
  • Publication of Single drugs/revised Monographs and formulations received under EoI (Expression of Interest) scheme of PCIM&H
  • Development of CRM & BRS, NABL – ISO/IEC/17025:2018 Accreditation
  • NABL accreditation of chemistry and microbiology laboratory
  • Implementation of Integrated Management System (IMS) Certification
  • Development of a herbal garden in 10-acre land

The Ministry also informed the Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare that it is actively considering legislation for the regulation of Yoga and Naturopathy, as well as Ayush Pharmacy and Allied Healthcare Professions.

These laws will improve access to quality and affordable education of Yoga and Naturopathy in the country, ensure the availability of adequate and high-quality professions, and encourage professionals to adopt the latest research.


National Institutes to Undertake Various Projects

From 2023-24 onwards, the National Institute of Siddha will undertake projects to accommodate undergraduate students in college and hostel buildings.

During the same period, the National Institute of Naturopathy (NIN), Pune, will begin a functional Nisarg Gram Project. The project will feature a 250-bedded hospital, medical college, research unit, and Living Gandhi Memorial.

The Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy will undertake evidence-based studies on modern parameters, public health policy, economic and operational research studies, collaborate with other institutes for basic research study and disease for national health importance, and develop research centres as centres of excellence and also develop a consortium.

Parliamentary Panel Recommendations

The Parliamentary panel headed by Member of Parliament Bhubaneswar Kalita has recommended that the proposed legislation on Yoga and Naturopathy and Ayush Pharmacy and Allied Healthcare Professions should be expedited.

The Committee believes that these laws will play a pivotal role in the regulation of Ayush Industry and Professions and Yoga & Naturopathy.

The Committee is of the view that Naturopathy and yoga can be well integrated with modern systems of medicine for the treatment of various diseases.
