Ahmedabad: A study carried out by a team from Gujarat Technological University (GTU) claimed that some of the drugs used in the treatment of diabetes and hypertension were found to have nitrosamine content in amounts higher than the limits prescribed.
Nitrosamines are considered to be carcinogens or cancer-causing impurities. GTU officials said that about 60 drugs of 15 brands were chosen for the study.
“The purpose of the study was to find nitrosamine content as some lots of the drugs exported to the US were returned over high content. It motivated us to take up the research,” said an official.
The international standards prescribe 0.03 micrograms per gram limit for nitrosamines.
The researchers claimed that in some of the drugs, the nitrosamine quantity was up to 30 times higher than what was prescribed.
