Spurious Drugs

The Drug Testing Laboratory (DTL) recently uncovered a shocking reality: seven pharma companies are manufacturing and distributing spurious drugs in the Pakistani drug market.

These “spurious” drugs pose a grave threat to public health, potentially containing toxic substances.

Spurious Drugs: A Dangerous Threat

The DTL, in a report signed by Sindh Director Syed Adnan Rizvi, revealed that these companies are operating under false pretenses.

Fake Licenses and Addresses: The report highlights the alarming discovery that the license numbers printed on these medications were never issued, and the addresses listed on the packaging are completely fabricated.

Absence of Active Ingredients: These spurious drugs had no Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). APIs are the main components in the drugs that provide therapeutic effects.

The absence of the APIs in the drugs is potentially harmful and ineffective.

List of Spurious Drugs:

The DTL identified dangerous spurious drugs, including:

Antibiotics:

  • Eyosef 250 mg capsules (East Pharmaceuticals, Lahore) are used to treat bacterial infections.

Anti-infective Suspensions:

  • Alcoxime suspension (Alpine Laboratories (Pvt) Ltd, Karachi)
  • Milixime suspension (Menakline Pharma, Karachi)
  • Mirzpan suspension (Miraz Pharma, Kasur)

Antianxiety Medications:

  • Mirzolam tablets (Miraz Pharma, Kasur)
  • Lexopam tablets (Porm Pharmaceuticals, Peshawar)
  • Zionex tablet (Multicare Pharmaceutical Karachi)
  • Bromalex (Brom Pharmaceuticals Lahore)

Potential Health Risks

The consequences of consuming these spurious drugs can be risky for the health:

Toxic Substances: These drugs may contain harmful toxins and even narcotics in lethal doses.

Unhygienic conditions: These drugs may be manufactured in unhygienic conditions, which may pose a potential risk to the health, e.g., infection, contamination.

Ineffective treatment: The absence of the active pharmaceutical ingredients in these drugs may lead to ineffective treatment, which may pose health risks.

“These medications were being sold in the market, but the license numbers of these products were never allotted.

Even addresses of the pharmaceutical companies mentioned on the drugs were fake,” stated Noor Mahar, President of the Pakistan Drug Lawyers Forum, in an interview with Dawn.
