Global Pharma Exports

India’s pharmaceutical sector is making significant presence on the world stage, securing the 11th position in global pharma exports by value in 2023.

Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Anupriya Patel, in the Rajya Sabha, highlighted this achievement and India’s commitment to manufacturing safe drugs with high quality and efficacy.

Strengthening Quality

The foundation of this success lies in the stringent measures implemented by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) with state drug regulatory authorities and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Recognizing the critical importance of ensuring drug safety, the CDSCO, in collaboration with state regulators, conducted risk-based inspections of drug manufacturing and testing facilities in December 2022.

These inspections, which have been done jointly by CDSCO and state regulatory authorities, are the key factor in boosting pharmaceutical regulatory compliance.

The authorities have inspected 905 pharma units, and 694 actions are being taken.

Ensuring Affordability Through NPPP

Beyond quality control, the government is also focused on ensuring affordability.

The National Pharmaceuticals Pricing Policy (NPPP) 2012 plays a very important role in regulating drug prices.

This policy focuses on:

Regulation based on the essentiality of drugs: prioritizing the affordability of crucial drugs.

Regulation of formulation prices only: Focusing on the final drugs that consumers use rather than active raw materials.

Market-based pricing: Allowing for competitive pricing while ensuring affordability.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), under the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP), implements the NPPP by fixing ceiling prices under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO) 2013.

The NPPA ensures that essential medicines must be accessible to the public at reasonable and afforadable prices.

Transparency by Pharma Sahi Daam App

The Ministry has launched the Pharma Sahi Daam (PSD) mobile app to enhance transparency and empower consumers.

This app is available on both Android and Apple platforms, and it provides the following:

  • Brand names of drugs.
  • Composition of drugs.
  • Ceiling prices.
  • Maximum retail prices.

This initiative allows consumers to make informed choices and ensures that they are not overcharged for their medicines.
