The Andhra Pradesh government is aggressively working for opening the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJK) outlets or Jan Aushadhi Stores, in all the public health centres (PHCs) in the state.

In Andhra Pradesh, there are 1509 PHCs under the health department.

The directorate of public health (DPH) wanted all the district medical officers (DMOs) to find out availability of space in each PHC and provide information to the government in another two weeks.

As a first step, the DPH has wanted the DMOs to ensure writing prescriptions by physicians in generic names and preferably in capital letters only.

Dr Geetha Prasadini, the director of public health of AP, issued an order in this regard recently urging the district medical and health officers to instruct all medical officers (Doctors) under them to follow the directive of the erstwhile medical council of India and of the government in respect of generic prescription

According to sources, most of the doctors in AP are still scribbling down the names of medicines which the government wants to stop immediately so as to make everybody read the prescriptions.

Sources further said, the government order of January 20 this year was issued following continuous refusal by the medical professionals to comply with the directive of the medical council of India and the state medical council and also of the governments to prescribe medicines in generic names and write them legibly and preferably in capital letters.

The state health department has once again given strict instruction to the doctors’ community prior to opening Jan Aushadhi stores in all PHCs.

The erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) had issued a directive to all medical professionals in the country in this regard on September 28, 2016. Subsequently, all the state governments issued similar orders with advice to physicians to follow the MCI order.

But, except a few doctors in certain states, the order was not implemented uniformly in the entire country so far despite repeated requests being continuously made.
