Tamil Nadu: The Tamil Nadu pharma industry can now heave a sigh of relief as the state government has finally pitched Tindivanam, the second largest town in Villupuram district, as the ideal location for a pharma park for formulation manufacturing.

The association was in search of several places nearby Chennai including the integrated vaccine complex (IVC) site at Chengalpattu for bringing up the formulation park. Finally, after discussions with the industry department, TN IDMA proposed Tindivanam which was agreed in principle by the government as the location for the formulation park, it is learnt.

According to sources from the state branch of the Indian Drugs Manufacturers Association (TN IDMA), the chief minister will soon announce the project details with Tindivanam as the cluster site, probably in the first week of November.

IDMA leaders who met the industry secretary last week were informed that the government would notify 250 acres of land for the development of the proposed formulation and nutraceutical park in Tindivanam.

This formulation park is in addition to the API park proposed to be set up in Cheyyar in Thiruvannamalai district under the central government scheme. However, that proposal is still pending for clearance.

Tindivanam Formulation Park is completely a project of the state government aimed at boosting the small and medium players of Tamil Nadu, said J Jayaseelan, chairman of the TN IDMA.

“TN IDMA is working hard to bring up the formulation and nutraceutical park, and now the government has agreed to allot 250 acres of land in Villupuram district which will be announced shortly by the chief minister. The land is ideal for setting up the project which includes both formulation and nutraceutical clusters.

The industry is waiting for the announcement and the support of incentives by the government for the promotion of the pharma industry. The park is mainly to focus on the development of the small and medium pharma manufacturing units (MSMEs),” Jayaseelan told Pharmabiz.

Apart from Tamil Nadu industry, the drug manufacturers of the union territory of Pondicherry are also elated now as the Tindivanam pharma park will benefit the pharmaceutical industry in the union territory also, which is 35 kilometers away from Tindivanam. Pondicherry is also a leader in drug manufacturing, where more than 100 formulation units are operating, all of them MSMEs.

Two years ago, the previous government was supposed to announce a cluster project in Gummidipundi near Chennai to support the state pharma industry sector. Their plan was to bring up a comprehensive pharma park with three units each for formulations, APIs and medical devices. But it did not happen due to a change of government after the general election.

TN IDMA will hold a meeting of all MSME units next week to work out on their recommendations to be given to the government after the official announcement of the location which is 130 kilometers away from Chennai airport.
