Mumbai: Generic pharmaceutical company BDR Pharma launched generic drug Biapenem (BIAPEN) to treat patients with intra-abdominal infections, lower respiratory infections, or complicated urinary tract infections.
Biapenem, now available in the market, is a parenteral carbapenem antibacterial agent with a broad spectrum of in vitro antibacterial activity encompassing many gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including species producing β-lactamases.
Biapenem is more stable than Imipenem and Meropenem in being hydrolyzed by human renal dehydropeptidase-I (DHP-I) and therefore does not require the co-administration of a DHP-I inhibitor such as Cilastatin.
In addition, Biapenem is widely distributed and penetrates well into various tissues, including lung tissue) and body fluids, including sputum, pleural effusion, abdominal cavity fluid, amongst others.
Biapenem showed comparable clinical and bacteriological efficacy to Imipenem / Cilastatin for treating patients with intra-abdominal infections, lower respiratory infections or complicated urinary tract infections.
The product will be marketed under BDR pharma’s and its co-sponsor’s brand names. The dosage of BIAPEN will be available in 300 mg strength, much less in comparison to the Carbapenems dosage used to treat infections.
