In a bid to improve the air quality in Indore, which is the industrial hub of Madhya Pradesh, the city administration has urged drug manufacturers to install piped natural gas (PNG) run boilers at their units.

Currently, drug units mostly located in Indore and its surroundings have diesel fired steam boilers and coal fired steam boilers, one of the main contributors to air pollution.

Taking serious note of this, Rishabh Gupta, chief executive officer, Indore Smart City, on January 11, 2022, held a meeting with the Madhya Pradesh Small Scale Drug Manufacturers Association (MPSDMA) and appealed to members of the association to switch from diesel and coal fired steam boilers to PNG run boilers to make the city greener.

PNG is mainly methane (CH4) with a very small percentage of other higher hydrocarbons like ethane, propane, butane, and pentane.

The ratio of carbon to hydrogen is least in methane and hence it burns upto 95 per cent making it the cleanest burning fuel.

The industry body has assured him of converting their traditional fuel run boilers upto 100 KW to PNG run boilers.

Gupta assured the drug manufacturers that he would look into issues faced by them after the installation of PNG run boilers.

Amit Chawla, secretary, MPSDMA, said, “We have a meeting with Rishabh Gupta, SK Jain, scientist, state pollution control board, officials from Indore Municipal Corporation, and Avantika Gas, supplier of PNG, about the installation of PNG run boilers at drug units to improve the air quality of the city.

The members of our association have agreed to switch to PNG run boilers from traditional fuel run boilers to make the city greener.”

Indore Municipal Corporation has set a target of bringing the city’s air quality index (AQI) below 50.

As part of an ongoing clean air initiative, the municipal corporation is planning to install air-pollution sensors at 19 junctions in the city for real-time monitoring of air quality and the effectiveness of measures planned to curb air pollution.

This project will be taken up by IMC, traffic police, and pollution control board under the smart city initiative.
