The pharmaceutical industry is heavily dependent on quality compressed air.
It is used for accomplishing various pneumatic processes required throughout the processing, manufacturing, and packaging of pharmaceutical products.
As India secures 3rd position worldwide in pharmaceutical production, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends the use of quality compressed air for manufacturing high-quality end products to meet the highest industry standards.
Moisture is a major deterrent for the pharmaceutical industry, especially in the manufacturing of tablets.
It can severely meddle with the tablet compression and tablet coating processes.
The compression of powdered material into tablet form is done under high pressure in an ultimate dry state.
The various materials used in medicines are highly hygroscopic in nature which can cause the lumping and caking of powder.
In presence of humidity, there can be an entire failure of the tableting process and in the worst case can cause decomposition of the drug.
It can severely lessen the medicinal value of the drug.
During the spray coating process of tablets, the presence of moisture in compressed air may lead to changes in the color, odor, and taste of pharma products.
Moisture causes blisters in tablets and may lead to the breakage of the tablets.
All the factors together are responsible for uneven coating.
As a result, inferior quality products are manufactured due to non-uniform coating.
Owing to this, a huge loss is incurred because of the rejection of the entire batch of tablets.
Apart from producing inferior quality tablets, moisture in compressed air leads to the malfunctioning of pneumatic tools and machines which are used for tablet manufacturing.
Moisture may also lead to corrosion in the pipelines, cylinders, and other components, it interferes with the smooth completion of the operations.
There is sluggish and inconsistent functioning of the pneumatic valve and cylinder.
The situation gets complicated when freezing occurs during cold weather.
All of these can take a toll on the pharma company as it increases the downtime of the pneumatic machines leading to high maintenance costs.
Therefore, to curb the moisture menace in the pharmaceutical industry, compressed air must be free from any form of contaminants like moisture, water, oil fumes, dust particles, or any form of solid contaminants.
For this, compressed air dryers must be installed to treat the compressed air required for various pneumatic processes.
Desiccant-based drying is suitable for processes requiring dry compressed air with the best pressure dew point of (-20oC) to (-40oC) max.
The desiccant used in the drying process is for adsorbing and desorbing water vapor. It uses the pressure swing principle/purge air to regenerate the desiccant bed.
Therefore, it can be said that dry compressed air is a fundamental requirement for the manufacturing of tablets.
It is essential for producing the highest quality tablets, free from any kind of contamination and unsatisfactory appearance.
