NEW DELHI: The cap on prices of coronary stents – both for bare metal and drug-eluting ones – has been increased with the revision of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI).

According to an order by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), issued on March 31, the ceiling price of bare metal stent has been revised to Rs 10,509 while that of drug-eluting stents (DES,) including metallic DES and bio-absorbable vascular scaffold or bio-degradable stents, has been revised to Rs 38,265.

In April 2022, the ceiling price of these two categories of stents stood at Rs 9,373 and Rs 34,128 respectively.

AdvtA coronary stent is a tube-shaped device that is placed in the arteries to keep them open as part of treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD), the most common type of heart disease.

CAD is caused by plaque build-up (deposits of cholesterol and other substances) in the walls of the arteries.

In 2022, the health ministry notified inclusion of coronary stents in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) to make the life-saving medical devices more affordable.
