Maharashtra government is planning to set up a new drug testing lab in Pune for timely analysis of drug samples in the state.

As of today, drug testing labs are available in Mumbai, Aurangabad and Nagpur.

Delay in analysing not-of-standard and sub-standard drugs and preparing results of drug samples could be reduced considerably with the setting up of more drug testing laboratories. Effective drug recall is the major objective of setting up such drug testing labs.

Drawing samples, analysing them for safety and drug recall will get a boost with the upgradation of drug testing infrastructure across the state.

Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Abhimanyu Kale has chalked out a comprehensive plan for the upgradation of manpower and labs to tackle non-compliance to drug rules and curb illegal sales of counterfeit drugs.

Kale informed, “Technical manpower in labs put together which currently stands at 80 plus staff will also be upgraded. As of today, Mumbai tests 4,000 samples, Aurangabad tests 1,000 samples and Nagpur tests 500 to 600 samples on an annual basis.”

All the three labs in Mumbai, Aurangabad and Nagpur are also being strengthened as part of boosting the drug regulatory mechanism in the state through a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) worth Rs. 136 crore with financial support from the State government.

As per the government plan, the Central and state governments will allocate funds in the ratio of 60:40 to strengthen the drug regulatory infrastructure in the state of Maharashtra.

The Union health ministry constantly reviews the Central assistance scheme which started in 2016-17 towards upgrading the drug regulatory system in the state.

“Capacity building of labs, recruitment of technical manpower, installing sophisticated instruments and logistical support is high on the agenda of Maharashtra FDA,” Kale concluded.
