Prescription of generic medicines

The health department of Chandigarh has taken a significant step towards promoting the use of generic medicines in government hospitals and dispensaries.

In accordance with the guidelines issued by the National Medical Council, the Chandigarh health department has mandated the prescription of generic medicines in all healthcare facilities.

Furthermore, the directorate general of health services, ministry of health & family welfare, has also directed central government hospitals, CGHS wellness centers, and polyclinics to adopt the practice.

Non-compliance with this directive will result in appropriate action being taken against the healthcare professionals responsible.

Implementation of the Directive:

To ensure compliance with the directive, UT health secretary Yashpal Garg has issued an order to the director of health services and the director principal of GMCH 32.

The order requires all doctors in the Chandigarh administration’s health facilities to prescribe generic medicines exclusively.

Failure to comply with this regulation will lead to consequences for the healthcare providers involved.

Exceptional Circumstances:

In exceptional circumstances where branded medicines are deemed necessary, the directive allows for their prescription.

However, it is mandatory to maintain a date-wise diary documenting the reasons for prescribing branded generic drugs. This step ensures transparency and accountability in the prescription process.

Advocacy for Generic Drugs at PGI:

Recently, the director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) expressed support for the use of generic drugs within the hospital.

Responding to this, Prince Bhandula, the medical convener of the BJP cell, appealed to the Prime Minister and the Union health minister to establish a Jan Aushadi shop in the emergency area of PGI.

However, the decision is yet to be made, considering factors such as the availability of all necessary medicines and the high rental cost of the emergency shop, which exceeds Rs 1 crore per month.

Ensuring Quality and Affordability:

While promoting the use of generic medicines, officials have acknowledged the lack of regulation regarding the pricing of different generic drugs with identical salt compositions.

This inconsistency in pricing emphasizes the need for patients to purchase medications from Jan Aushadi shops, where the quality of drugs is monitored by accredited bodies.

PGI director Prof Vivek Lal highlights the importance of these shops in maintaining drug quality standards.

Conclusion:

The implementation of the generic medicine prescription mandate in government hospitals and dispensaries in Chandigarh marks a crucial step towards affordable healthcare.

With the support of the health department and the cooperation of healthcare professionals, the use of generic medicines is expected to increase, ensuring quality healthcare for all patients.
