Nashik: The licences of 121 chemists have been suspended and that of 38 cancelled in the last financial year by the Food and Drugs Administration (Drugs), Nashik.
The drugs department of the FDA has decided to get even stricter against owners of medical shops for violating norms under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
FDA officials said that they have received complains from people of not being given bills on purchase of medicines.
It has also been observed that pharmacists often leave the medical stores in charge of non-pharmacists, which increase the chances of patients getting wrong medications.
FDA (drugs) officials said that they inspected a total 1,042 medical stores during the last financial year.
Officials added that in 2021-22, they inspected 788 medical stores, suspended the licences of 127 and cancelled 33 licences.
In 2020 and 2021, the inspection was carried out in 736 medical stores, 40 licences were suspended and 108 cancelled.
Other officials said most violations were by pharmacists, who had a major role to play than just selling medicines.
Officials said that there were many drugs, which cannot go with alcohol. Further, certain drugs are also habit-forming and consuming more than one drug at the same time, without any knowledge can also be harmful.
A person, who has no knowledge of drugs, is not able to explain all such things to a patient or his relative coming to the medical store.
It is the responsibility of a pharmacist at a medical store to explain the dosage schedule to patients, the manner in which the medicine should be taken, storage requirement etc.
