PLI scheme
The Indian government is leaving no stone unturned to bolster the country’s pharmaceutical industry.
A key initiative in this direction is the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Pharmaceuticals.
With a massive budget of Rs 15,000 crore and a six-year timeline ending in FY 2027-28, the scheme aims to incentivize domestic manufacturing of critical drugs.
Focus on High-Value Drug Categories
To make a significant impact, the PLI scheme has identified three key product categories for support:
- Bio-pharmaceuticals: These complex and high-value drugs are engineered using living organisms.
- Complex generics: Generic versions of patented drugs that require advanced manufacturing processes.
- Gene therapy drugs, complex excipients, and orphan drugs: These are specialized medications for rare diseases and specific medical conditions.
PLI Scheme Supports Orphan Drug Production
A particularly noteworthy aspect of the PLI scheme is its focus on orphan drugs.
These life-saving medications cater to patients with rare diseases, often neglected by the pharmaceutical industry due to limited market size.
The government has identified eight crucial orphan drugs for manufacturing under the PLI scheme:
Sr. No. | Product Name | Usage |
---|---|---|
1 | Nitisinone | Treatment of Hereditary Tyrosinemia Type 1 |
2 | Nusinersen | Treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy |
3 | Rufinamide | Treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome |
4 | Sodium Phenyl Butyrate | Treatment of Urea Cycle Disorders |
5 | Tiopronin | Prevention of Cystine Nephrolithiasis |
6 | Trientine Hydrochloride | Treatment of Wilson’s disease |
7 | Eliglustat | Treatment of Gaucher’s disease |
8 | Cannabidiol | Treatment of Dravet-Lennox Gastaut syndrome |
By promoting the domestic production of these orphan drugs, India is taking a major step towards ensuring affordable and accessible treatment options for patients suffering from rare diseases.
The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Anupriya Patel, in the Lok Sabha, underlining the government’s commitment to improving healthcare access for all citizens.
