Heart attack: This blood group is at a higher risk: Study
As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), heart disease has been one of the leading causes of deaths globally. But you should be especially careful if you have a non-O blood type. Yes, you read that right.
Study: what it says
According to a recent study, people with non-O blood type are actually at an increased risk of a heart attack.
Researchers discovered how blood type can increase the risk of a heart attack. The findings of the study were published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, an American Heart Association (AHA).
The study analysed more than 400,000 people and found that people with blood type A or B have a combined 8 per cent higher risk of heart attack than those with blood type O.
Other study: what it says
A similar study which included more than 1.36 million people was done by the European Society of Cardiology in 2017.
This study also found that people with non-O types blood type are 9 per cent more at risk of coronary and cardiovascular events, especially heart attacks.
People at risk
The researchers compared blood type A and B with blood type O. It was found that people with B blood type were at an increased risk of a heart attack.
As per the study, people with B blood type had a 15 per cent increased risk for myocardial infarction (heart attack) as compared to O blood type people.
People with blood type A have the highest risk of heart failure
People with A blood type had an 11 per cent increased risk of heart failure compared to blood type O.
Heart failure and heart attack are both forms of heart disease, but heart failure tends to develop gradually while heart attacks happen more suddenly.
Heart attack can result in heart failure over time.
Why does it happen?
As per the European Society of Cardiology, the increased risk of heart attack or heart failure between non O-type blood groups can be due to the fact that they are more likely to develop blood clots.
A 2017 study explained that non-O blood group people have a greater concentration of non-Willebrand factor, a blood-clotting protein that has been associated with thrombotic events.
People with blood type A and type B were 44 per cent more likely to experience thrombosis, a formation of a blood clot.
Blood clots play a major role in heart attack, they can block the coronary artery and strive for the heart muscle of oxygen and nutrients, resulting in a heart attack.
