JAIPUR: For how many days a C-19 patient is supposed to have anticoagulants also known as blood thinners? This question is often asked by the C-19 recovered patients. In the new protocol the doctors are now advising to have blood thinners for two to three months for the C-19 recovered patients.

Core team of C-19 management and care has advised the patients including young and older and with or without co-morbidities to have anticoagulants for two to three months. Doctors after noticing the recent cases in which a patient recovered from C-19 had a heart attack or brain stroke are now advising the patients to continue to blood thinners from two to three months.

“In many of the reports of even young patients it is seen that the D-dimer level is very high even after 15 days of recovery from C-19. So, during this second wave when majority of the patients had oxygen dependency, the D-dimer and other infections are high.

Thus, it is advisable that they should continue the anticoagulants for two to three months,” said Dr Ajeet Singh, Superintendent of RUHS told on Friday. He added that as a post C-19 symptoms many patients are seen with viral myocarditis which lead to cardiac arrest.

Likewise, Dr Sudhir Bhandari, principal and controller, SMS Medical College, who head the core team, said, “We had witnessed many patients including young and older with or without comorbidities having strokes and heart attack.

At the SMS Hospital the heart specialists are now busy as many after recovering from C-19 are coming with heart ailments. So, I would advise everyone to get their D-dimmer done after 15 days and one month of recovery and continue the anticoagulants for at least two months.”

Many people are getting anticoagulants from over the counter from the medical shops. “Earlier the sale of anticoagulants was confined to the aged heart patients, now it is selling out like any other medicines. Every second patient coming with doctors prescription asks for at least 60 pills which is advised once in a day for two months,” said Suresh Sharma who owns a medical shop near SMS Hospital.
