The Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) has decided to keep revision of ceiling prices of medicines in abeyance till the new National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM), 2021 is released by the ministry of health and family welfare, according to sources.
The department, in a notification, said that the Central Government has granted one time exemption from revision of ceiling price under the Drug (Price Control) Order, 2013, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 ” and to keep in abeyance the revision of ceiling prices after completion of five years term till NLEM 2021 is released by the ministry of health and family welfare.”
The government has been working on the revised NLEM, to update it according to the changes taking place in the healthcare sector, with more focus on chronic ailments including cancer, diabetes, among others.
The NLEM 2011, from May, 2013 to February 2016, helped the consumer to save Rs. 2,422 crore, and the NLEM 2015, from March, 2016 to the beginning of July, 2019, helped patients to save Rs. 2,644 crore, according to the Government of India.
It also helped patients to save Rs. 4,547 crore till then, on Coronary Stents, Rs 1,500 crore in knee implants and Rs 984 crore in anti-cancer drugs, said the then Union minister for chemicals and fertilizers D V Sadananda Gowda.
