Govt joins hands with industry to set up Pharma Park

Considering the contribution of pharma MSMEs in Pondicherry to the production of pharmaceuticals, exports and employment, the government of the Union territory has decided to support the UT’s pharma industry to become a global trader in pharmaceuticals.

To promote this concept, the UT Administration has mooted a pharma park project which will make the pharma MSME units to become world class entrepreneurs in pharmaceutical business.

As part of this, the drug control department in association with the Pondicherry Drugs Manufacturers Association (PDMA) has conducted a meeting of industry leaders recently, and captains of pharma industry and leaders of associations from Tamil Nadu and the Union territory attended.

According to E Ananda Krishnan, the drug controller, 113 pharma manufacturers and association representatives attended the meeting which was inaugurated by PDMA chairman N Pramodh. He said an amount of Rs. 500 crore is required to fulfill the pharma park project.

The UT chief minister N Rangaswamy was the chief guest at the function who said the pharma industry sector in Pondicherry is at the centre of attention now and the government wants to make it as one of the key pillars of the UT economy.

The government is ready to support the integrated park project and attracting benefits will be given to all investors, especially those from outside of Tamil Nadu. The CM said all industry persons should work together to bring investors from everywhere and make the project a successful one.

S V Veeramani, vice-chairman of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil), who was also present at the meeting, said the export promotion council under the Union ministry of commerce will give all guidance to the drug manufacturers of Pondicherry on export opportunities.

He said the pharma industry in the Union territory, especially the MSMEs, can increase their production and get into exports to establish a global business in pharmaceuticals with the new initiative taken by the government. Pharmexcil wants to encourage all members of the manufacturing sector and enlighten them on export incentives.

J Jayaseelan, chairman of the Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry state board of the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association (IDMA) said he will support the pharma park project of the UT by passing on the benefits given by the UT administration to all IDMA members in the country to attract more investors to Pondicherry.

He wanted all members of the Union territory to become members of the IDMA to strengthen the industry’s voice at national level.

P Ramesh Kumar, president of the PDMA said majority of the pharma industry in Pondicherry still remain micro in their operational status, but they want to be global traders.  

According to him, the pharma park in Pondicherry will raise job opportunities for 25,000 people directly and indirectly. Along with its growth, several ancillary industries can also become larger units.

E Sreenivasan, secretary of the association, said common facilities like ETP, water treatment plant, quality control centre and warehousing should be set up at the beginning of the project.

C Udayakumar, health secretary to Pondicherry government, Dr S Manivannan, deputy drugs controller, CDSCO Chennai and M Rajaratinam, past president of TN IDMA also attended the meeting.
