Dharwad: Nearly 80% of children in the state who have not taken the C-19 vaccine have already been infected with C-19 and have developed antibodies.

This has altered the immune system in kids and has made them susceptible to other viral diseases, said senior pediatrics consultant Dr. Jagadish Chinnappa.

Interacting with media people at the continued medical education program (CME) organized by the Vithal Institute of Child Health here, he said the prevalence of prolonged respiratory problems, frequent fever, throat aches, oral ulcers, hand, foot, and mouth diseases has increased in children post-C-19.

Antibiotics are required only for bacterial infections and not for viral infections, he said. Abuse of antibiotics will be harmful as it brings down immunity among children, he added.

“The C-19 restrictions and lockdown have resulted in children not being exposed to viruses and, hence, their immunity has been low.” “This has led to viral infections now,” he said.

He said 10 new viruses have surfaced in the last 10 months, and many of them go away with low-grade fever, cold, and cough.

Parents should have patience and wait for the medicines advised by doctors to cure the children, he said.

Paediatric Infectious Disease chief Dr. Bhaskar Shenoy emphasized the need to regulate over-the-counter medications.

Stating that cough should not be suppressed as it is a protective mechanism, he advised parents not to administer syrups when children cough.

Normally, children suffering from fever and cough will be active after the fever subsides. It takes a minimum of five days for the fever to reduce, and it should be ensured that the child is not dehydrated.

If the child continues to feel tired even after the fever subsides, then investigations need to be done,” Dr. Bhaskar said.

He added that children getting addicted to mobile phones will suffer from sleep loss, which could be harmful, and advised parents to keep children away from mobile phones.

Senior pediatrician Dr. Rajan Deshpande said C-19 has not disappeared and hence people should exercise caution.
