Indicating that Mizoram is a promising land for industry development, the state drug controller and president of the state pharmacy council (MSPC), Dr. Lalsawma Pachuau, is chalking out a strategy to attract pharmaceutical industries from nearby states like Assam, Sikkim and West Bengal to Mizoram aiming to develop a pharma industry cluster in the north east with Aizwal as the hub.
Taking inspiration from Sikkim, which is now home to around 20 major pharma companies in the north east, he contacted pharma experts and industry consultants to chart out a roadmap for developing one pharma industry cluster with the support of the government.
Along with, efforts will be made to bring up more educational institutions in various cities.
Dr. Lalsawma Pachuau said he is on the lookout for consultants to design a proposal to be submitted to the government in this regard.
An expert administrator with a vision for development, Dr. Lalsawma has also sought the support of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) for setting up more institutions in the north east, especially in Mizoram.
He said he takes the interest to bring industry to Mizoram because he wants the students of pharmaceutical sciences in the north eastern part of the country closer to the pharma industry. He feels that industry-academic relation is necessary for the over-all development of pharmacy courses and pharmacy profession.
Currently the students of Mizoram and other states in the north east are going to north Indian states of Himachal Pradesh, New Delhi and Punjab for training purposes.
“If more industrial units come to Mizoram, the institutions can conduct seminars and meetings in association with the industry.
Further they can have their training here itself. In addition to all these, the job opportunities for the diploma and degree holders will increase and the state can procure medicines from the domestic markets.
The drug control department will discuss the idea with other pharmacy professionals for more suggestions for preparing the draft of the proposal. After all, the pharma industry is a significant and valuable source of revenue to the state”, he said.
According to Dr. Lalsawma, the government will rope in experts and industry leaders from other states to work out on the proposal and realize the project. He pointed out that there are suitable locations with sufficient land and an efficient environment for starting industrial units in and around Aizwal.
Young entrepreneurs can also venture into start-up units for pharma manufacturing. The proposal will consist of subsidized land and tax-free areas for establishing formulation units and allied industries.
His proposal includes infrastructure facilities for formulation making, API manufacturing, and other common facilities such as common testing centre (CTC), training centre, R&D wing, effluent treatment plant (ETP), common logistics centre (CLC) and a warehouse.
As regards educational institutions, he said presently Mizoram has only two pharmacy colleges, one in government sector and another one in private sector.
The government institution has diploma, degree and post-graduate courses in various branches of pharmacy. Students from across the country are taking admission in the government college for various courses.
Dr. H Lalhlenmawia, PCI member and Head of Department of the Regional Institute of Pharmaceutical and Nursing Sciences (RIPANS) in Aizwal said the education sector in Mizoram will fully support the proposal being drafted by the drug controller Dr. Lalsawma as he is a good pharma visionary in the north east.
