Private and government doctors were among 18 people arrested by police for conducting illegal sex determination tests and performing abortions in Warangal district, Telangana.
The racket was busted in a joint operation by Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Task Force sleuths and Kakatiya University Campus (KUC).
Police seized three scanners, 10 cellphones and Rs73,000 in cash.
Warangal commissioner of police AV Ranganath said that they launched decoy operations after they received informations that some people were conducting illegal sex determination tests, and aborting female foetuses, while charging huge sums for them.
They charged anything between Rs20,000 and Rs30,000 for an abortion.
Police said the prime accused, identified as Vemula Praveen, established a secret network of RMPs, hospital PROs and management, medical staff and some doctors to conduct the tests and abortions. Praveen had earlier worked in scanning centres as a technician.
Praveen and his wife Sandhyarani ran the illegal sex determination centre from a rented house at Venkateshwara Colony in Gopalpur. They used portable scanners and hired personnel to run the tests illegally.
The police said the gang conducted abortions at Lotus Hospital at Hanumakonda, Gayathri Hospital, Upender (Pardhu) Hospital at Nekkonda, and Balaji Multi-Specialty Hospital at Narsampet.
Warangal DMHO, Ramana said: “We raided all many scanning centres but found no illegalities in their records. Legally we cannot seize or cancel registration of violators without catching them red-handed.”
Apart from Praveen and Vemula Sandhyarani, the police also arrested Dr Balne Parthu, Dr Moram Aravinda, Dr Moram Srinivas Murthy, Dr Balne Poornima along with other accused.
