Approved port for import of drugs

Download notification no. GSR No. 410(E) dt 02-06-2023, the link is given below: The Union health ministry has recently issued a final notification permitting the import of drugs into India through Gangavaram Port located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

This decision comes as an amendment to the Drugs Rules, 1945, specifically Rule 43A, and expands the designated ports for drug imports.

The Ministry took into account public feedback and suggestions before releasing the final notification no. GSR No. 410(E) dt 02-06-2023.

Expansion of Drug Import Ports:

The Ministry’s draft amendment, published on March 1, 2023, proposed the inclusion of Gangavaram Port alongside Krishnapatnam Port for drug imports.

After considering objections and suggestions from the public, the Central government finalized the amendment.

Gangavaram Port:

A Strategic Location for Imports:

Gangavaram Port, situated in the northern part of Andhra Pradesh near Vizag Port, is the third largest non-major port in the state.

It operates as an all-weather, deep-water, multipurpose port with a capacity of 64 million metric tons (MMT).

The port is capable of handling fully laden super cape size vessels weighing up to 200,000 deadweight tons (DWT).

It currently operates nine berths and possesses approximately 1,800 acres of freehold land. The concession for its operation extends till 2059.

Strategic Importance of Gangavaram Port:

The CEO and whole-time director of APSEZ, Karan Adani, emphasized the significance of the GPL acquisition.

He stated that it is a pivotal milestone in establishing East Coast and West Coast parity, as Gangavaram Port serves as a business gateway to the hinterland, spanning eight states.

The port boasts excellent rail and road network connectivity, and its recent addition of a container handling terminal will accelerate cargo volume growth.

With a master plan capacity of 250 million metric tons per annum (MMTPA) and 31 berths, GPL has ample potential for future expansion.

Designated Ports for Drug Imports:

Under Rule 43A of the Drugs Rules, 1945, the Ministry has listed specific ports and airports for importing drugs into India.

For sea imports, the designated ports include:

• Chennai,
• Kolkata,
• Mumbai,
• Kochi,
• Nava Sheva,
• Kandla,
• Tughlakabad,
• Patparganj.

Inland Container Depots in:

• Delhi,
• Tuticorin,
• Kamarajar Ports in Tamil Nadu,
• Marmugao Port in Goa,
• Visakhapatnam,
• Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh,
• Haziia Port,
• Khohdiyar, Gandhinagar,
• Mundra Port in Gujarat,
• Dhannad
• Tihi in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

For air imports, the listed airports are:

• Chennai,
• Kolkata,
• Mumbai,
• Delhi,
• Ahmedabad,
• Hyderabad,
• Goa,
• Bengaluru,
• Visakhapatnam.

The Union health ministry’s decision to include Gangavaram Port as an authorized port for drug imports marks a significant step in expanding India’s import capabilities.

Located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Gangavaram Port’s deep-water facilities and excellent connectivity position it as a vital gateway for pharmaceutical imports.
