Hyderabad: In a significant step to help poor people, organ transplantations will be done free of cost in government hospitals, Eatala Rajender, state health minister, told the media on Thursday.

These critical procedures will now be brought under the Aarogyasri health scheme, he said. Rajender said modern facilities would be set up in all the state-run teaching hospitals for organ transplantations.

“Till now, only Gandhi, Osmania hospitals and NIMS are doing these operations in a limited number. The government will recruit more health and paramedical staff and also amend the legislation, if needed, in this regard,” he said. The state is ready to spend Rs 2,000 crore to augment healthcare in government hospitals, he said.

“Aarogyasri will be further streamlined so that there will be no need to spend additional funds from the CM relief fund for free treatment,” the minister said. The state government has allocated Rs 1,200 crore to this healthcare scheme. Explaining the recommendations of a sub-committee, the minister said Hyderabad area would be divided into eight zones for conducting free medical tests like x-ray and CT scan.
