How to distinguish between fake and genuine supplements

The pandemic has made people extremely cautious about their health. From eating healthy, exercising to even including supplements, we are taking all the important health measures to keep our health in good shape.

However, with so many supplements available in the market, how to make out the fake ones from the genuine ones. Fake supplements many times contain banned substances such as steroids, harmful chemicals and spurious ingredients, but appear similar to the original supplements.

These unwanted ingredients can cause permanent damage to the body. Due to the increased demand for dietary supplements in the last few decades, both genuine and fake supplements have thrived.

High-quality health supplements are imported and thus are highly expensive. Here are some easy way one can distinguish between genuine and fake supplements.

Look for the barcode

Mobile phones today support apps that can read barcodes and QR codes. A scan of the original brand will lead you to the website where you can get the details about the brand. Barcode is one of the surest signs of authenticity.

Check seal and packaging

Look out for awkward mistakes in spellings, unfamiliar fonts, errors in the information, logos that are different from the regular look.

Check the seal, if it’s tampered, you must return the product. Products manufactured by companies with poor infrastructure do not have high-quality seals.

Check FSSAI approval on the packaging

It’s important to check if the supplements has been approved by the Food Safety and Standards Association of India. Note that the supplements undergo various tests and multiple quality checks before they finally reach you.

Look out for the hologram

Examining the hologram is a sure-shot way of making a distinction between a genuine and fake product. Not every company can make and replicate the hologram. Holograms are used worldwide as a sign of authenticity.

Look out for the MRP sticker

Fake supplements have an MRP sticker, while original ones have a tag with the hologram on them. With the combination of MRP tag and hologram, it’s easy to find out if the product is original.

Dissolve in water

You can test the authenticity of the supplements by mixing a spoon of it in water. If it’s fake, the product will leave behind some powder or residue in the glass, while an original product won’t. Fake supplements also have a pungent smell and a bad aftertaste.

Buy from a reputable pharmacy

Whether it’s a retail store or Internet, buy from reputable websites and outlets.
