Generic medicines are a lot cheaper when compared to branded or patented medicines and are equally effective and medicines are absolutely safe, effective and accessible and affordable, stated Arushi Jain, executive director, Stayhappi Pharmacy.

Jain added that there is growing awareness in the recent years about the efficiency and efficacy of generic medicines. No development costs, no marketing costs and more supply are the three broad reasons as why generic drugs are cheaper and affordable.

Generic medicines use the same active ingredients as brand-name medicines and work the exact same way, so they have the same risks and benefits as the brand-name medicines. Not only are they equally useful, they are better at making healthcare for all.

It is high time that we make attempts to begin an unlearning process. Unlearning of things fed to consumers by industries for their own vested interests is essential in the current times,” added Jain.

Generic drugs are exactly the same as patented or branded drugs that have exactly the same dosage, intended use, effects, side effects, route of administration, risks, safety, and strength as the original drug. So basically, their pharmacological effects are exactly the same as those of their brand-name counterparts.

Jain added that generic medicines are approved only after a rigorous review to ensure all safety and quality standards are met, is conducted. Any generic medicine will perform the same in the body as the patented medicine.

It will be the same as a brand-name medicine if dosage, form and route of administration, safety, effectiveness, strength, and labeling (with certain limited exceptions) is similar.

The marketing strategies and most importantly the price differs. Patented or branded drugs are significantly higher priced than generic ones due to the reasons mentioned above.
