Lucknow: The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association called on chief secretary DS Mishra on Thursday to apprise him about a massive decline in the drug manufacturing industry in the state.

The CS, who was reportedly surprised to learn that there are less than 400 drug manufacturing units in UP currently, has said that immediate steps will be taken to rectify the situation and address concerns.

Association members also met chief minister Yogi Adityanath recently and briefed him about the alleged collusion between officials of the drug manufacturing department and large manufacturers, which was hurting the interests of small and medium manufacturers.

The top office-bearers of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of UP, including President Chandresh Bhargava and general secretary Atul Seth, were invited to meet the chief secretary.

The association members told Mishra that earlier UP was the foremost state in manufacturing medicines but over the past few years it lost out to neighboring states due to the lax attitude of officials.

“Forget setting up new units, it is becoming difficult to maintain existing units.”

“To know what the ground situation is, the government should get a study done of the drug industry in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat,” said Atul Seth, general secretary of the association.

The association said that tenders for medicines procured by the government have a condition that allows only those with an annual turnover of Rs 5-20 crore to apply.

This keeps out vendors from medium, small and micro categories. The reason behind this condition, as explained by officials, is that smaller units are not able to supply medicines on time.
