New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued the latest draft regulations pertaining to undergraduate medical education in the country.

As per the draft regulations brought in, students who enroll in an MBBS course would get only four attempts to pass in the first year and won’t be allowed to continue the course beyond a duration of nine years.

NMC has also included the provision of the formation of student associations in all the medical colleges across the country so that students also have a say in matters of their general welfare.

On the issue of migration, it would be given only in exceptional cases to meritorious students. However, the students will get migration only from one government medical college to another and from a private medical college to another private medical college only.

Speaking to Education Times, Dr Amit Gupta, professor, department of Surgery, AIIMS Rishikesh, says, “The latest draft regulations issued by NMC are progressive in nature and would streamline the medical education ecosystem in the country.

Fixing four attempts to clear the first year and not allowing students to remain enrolled in the medical UG course beyond nine years was much needed and should have been done earlier.

Many instances have come to the fore where many students have been lingering for many years, particularly in the state medical colleges.

For instance, a person aged 40 years was still pursuing MBBS in one of the state medical colleges.

Such aspirants are technically not competent and do not have the required knowledge to justify their presence in the medical profession.

Due to these changes, aspirants will take their studies seriously which will be instrumental in making them good-quality doctors in the future.”

“The introduction of elective or choice-based courses is in the academic interest of students as they would be able to broaden their knowledge base.”

“They would need to study nine elective subjects out of which five are compulsory and four can be chosen as per their interest.”

“Some of the electives that have been introduced are Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Biotechnology.”

“Also, the draft guidelines also mention the formation of student associations in every medical college which is essential as students should also be taken on board whenever some policy changes as far as their welfare is concerned,” informs Gupta.

A source in Health Ministry on the condition of anonymity, says, “Till now many students re-enroll in the MBBS course after getting failed in both central and state medical colleges.”

“Some instances have come to the fore where many students remained enrolled in the course for 10-20 years without getting passed which clearly indicates a lack of seriousness on their part.”

“As far as migration is concerned, students should not get migration from a private to a government medical college as it would be considered as a back door entry. This is because admission to a government medical college is based purely on merit.”
