All medical colleges to enroll with IPC

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has mandated all recognized medical colleges and standalone PG institutions to enroll with the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) as Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centres (AMCs) to promptly report adverse drug reactions (ADRs) as part of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI).

This move aims to enhance patient safety and integrate pharmacovigilance as a crucial component of public health programs.

Background

The NMC Act, 2019 established the National Medical Commission to improve access to quality and affordable medical education and ensure the availability of high-quality medical professionals across India.

The PvPI was approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in July 2010 to create a nationwide patient safety reporting system.

As of now, IPC has enrolled 652 AMCs in the country, and there are currently 654 medical colleges in India, representing a 69% increase from 2014 when there were only 387 medical colleges.

Moreover, the number of MBBS seats has increased by 94% from 51,348 to 99,763, while the number of postgraduate (PG) seats has increased by 107% from 31,185 before 2014 to 64,559 as of today.

National Coordination Centre (NCC) – PvPI

The National Coordination Centre (NCC) – PvPI, which was launched as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Pharmacovigilance in Public Health Programmes and Regulatory Services on October 30, 2017, oversees the implementation of the PvPI.

The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry

The government of India has identified the pharmaceutical sector as one of the key 25 sectors under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which aims to provide the necessary impetus to the sector to reach its full potential.
