Helpline

The Tamil Nadu Drug Control Department has recently introduced a new WhatsApp helpline number to facilitate the process of receiving complaints and grievances from stakeholders in the pharmaceutical and medical fields.

This facility is part of the government’s Online Grievance Redressal System and is available 24/7.

With this new initiative, stakeholders can now easily post their complaints on the WhatsApp number instead of sending emails, even for license-related issues.

Features of the WhatsApp Helpline Number

  • The helpline number, 9445865400, is connected to a computer monitor in the department’s office, with a senior official assigned to check messages every minute.
  • The WhatsApp helpline has received over 25,000 messages so far.
  • Messages sent to the number are forwarded to the concerned department for immediate action.
  • The WhatsApp helpline can also be used to share requests for renewal of licenses.

Director’s Comments

Director PV Vijayalakshmi of the drugs control administration has stated that the department had earlier proposed the establishment of a WhatsApp Complaint Cell to receive complaints and suggestions from the public.

This proposal has now been approved by the government. She also mentioned that the department’s online facility was launched in 2011 to provide quick and efficient services to the people and the industry.

Recent Developments in the Department

The department’s computerization process was initiated in 2011 by the then-director Dr G Selvaraju to make the administration more people-friendly.

The current director PV Vijayalakshmi, who took office in July of the previous year, has been working to strengthen the department by introducing reforms such as the WhatsApp complaint cell.

Under the leadership of Director M Sivabalan, the department established ten additional zonal offices in 2021, bringing the total number of zonal offices to 24.

The government has also approved Sivabalan’s proposal to increase the number of ADCs and drug inspectors.

Conclusion

With the introduction of the WhatsApp helpline, stakeholders in the pharmaceutical and medical fields can now quickly and easily report their complaints and grievances to the Tamil Nadu Drug Control Department.

The department’s efforts towards modernization and innovation will help increase transparency, efficiency, and speed in its functioning.
