Identity and Accountability: Declarations of Name and Address on Food Labels
In the intricate realm of food packaging, transparency regarding the origin and responsibility for a product is vital.
The regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSAI) emphasize the importance of declaring the name and complete address of the brand owner, manufacturer, marketer, packer, or bottler on the label.
Let’s delve into the specifics of these declarations.
1. Declaration for Brand Owners
Name and Complete Address:
- The label of every food product must bear the name and complete address of the brand owner. This applies whether or not the brand owner is also the manufacturer, marketer, packer, or bottler.
- Qualifying Words:
- The name and address must be preceded by qualifying words such as “Manufactured by,” “Marketed by,” “Manufactured & Marketed by,” or “Packed & Marketed by,” as appropriate. For alcoholic beverages, additional options include “Bottled by,” “Blended and Bottled by,” “Imported and Bottled by,” or “Distilled and Bottled by.”
2. Imported Food Declarations
Imported Food:
- In the case of imported food, the package must also display the name and complete address of the importer in India. This ensures accountability and traceability for products entering the Indian market.
- Country of Origin Declaration:
- If a food article is manufactured outside India but packaged or bottled in India, the label should include the name of the country of origin of the food article. Additionally, it must feature the name and complete address of the importer and the premises responsible for packing or bottling in India.
