Transparent Revelations: Declarations Regarding Food Additives in Food Products
In the intricate world of food labelling, transparency is paramount, especially when it comes to the presence of food additives.
The regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Act outline specific requirements for the declaration of food additives, emphasizing the importance of clarity and consumer awareness.
1. Functional Classes for Food Additives
Functional classes for food additives must be declared, accompanied by the specific name(s) or recognized International Numbering System (INS) as specified in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.
This ensures that consumers are informed about the nature and purpose of additives in the products they consume.
2. Declaration of Flavouring Agents
(a) Flavouring Agents:
For foods to which flavouring agents are added in accordance with Regulation 3.3.1(1) of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, specific declarations must be made in the list of ingredients.
i) Artificial Flavouring Substances:
In the case of artificial flavouring substances, the common name of the flavour must be explicitly declared.
This provides consumers with straightforward information about the nature of the artificial flavour.
ii) Natural Flavouring Substances or Nature Identical Substances:
For natural flavouring substances or nature identical substances, the class name of flavours should be declared.
This broader categorization ensures transparency without divulging proprietary information.
