The decision, announced in following Gazette notifications.
A Focus on Rational Drug Use
The government’s move is aimed at promoting rational drug use and preventing harm to consumers.
The banned drugs, primarily Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCs), were deemed irrational by an expert committee appointed by the Central Government.
These FDCs combine multiple drugs into a single pill, which can often lead to adverse effects or unnecessary treatment.
Impact on Pharmaceutical Companies
While the ban may have short-term implications for pharmaceutical companies, it is expected to have a positive long-term impact on public health.
Companies that can provide adequate data supporting the therapeutic justification of their products can continue to market them.
However, those unable to do so will be required to withdraw their products from the Indian market.
List of Banned Drugs
The list of banned drugs includes medications used for:
- Pain relief: Painkillers and analgesics
- Multivitamins: Nutritional supplements
- Antibiotics: Drugs used to treat infections
- Hair treatments: Products for hair growth or maintenance
- Antiparasitic purposes: Medications to treat parasitic infections
- Skincare: Topical treatments for skin conditions
- Anti-allergic treatments: Medications to relieve allergy symptoms
