Spurious drugs
The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) recently conducted raids on several dealers in Hyderabad, leading to the seizure of spurious drugs, i.e. spurious versions of ‘Montek-LC’ tablets.
These spurious drugs, falsely labeled as manufactured by Sun Pharma Laboratories Ltd., were found to be circulating in the market.
What is about ‘Montek-LC’ Tablet?
‘Montek-LC’ tablet is a combination of Montelukast and Levocetirizine which is used in the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives), allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and bronchial asthma.
What is the harmful effect of using spurious Drugs
Spurious drugs can cause harmful effect to the body which may lead to life threatening.
Reason:
Spurious drugs may not having the recommended quantity of the active ingredients which can lead to improper medical treatment.
Contamination: spurious drugs may be contaminated with harmful substances, such as heavy metals or bacteria, which can cause serious side effects, including organ damage and even death.
Side Effects: If spurious drugs may be used for a long period, it may cause some unknown side effects.
Telangana DCA’s Action:
The Telangana DCA gathered information and taken action very promptly.
During the raids, Drugs Inspectors also compared the seized batches with original samples provided by Sun Pharma Laboratories Ltd. Sun Pharma confirmed that the seized batches are spurious.
Findings of the raid:
Seized Batch: Batch No.: SIE1911A, Mfg. Date: 07/2023, Exp. Date: 12/2025.
Raid at: Hyper Pharma, Door No.: 17-1-375/1/1/3, Shop No 34, Santosh Nagar, Malakpet, Hyderabad.
The DCA Telangana has started further investigation and appropriate action against all culprits will be taken who are involved in the manufacturing and sale of these spurious drugs.
Advise to the public:
Always purchase drug from licensed medical stores.
Carefully check the packing and labeling of the drug which may have any signs of tampering.
If you believe that you have purchased spurious drug, immediately inform the details of the drug and seller to drug control authority or the police.
