Pharmacopoeias
The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) is set to host a very important event in the world pharmaceutical landscape, i.e., the Meeting of World Pharmacopoeias.
IPC will convene the 15th International Meeting of World Pharmacopoeias (IMWP) on February 5, 2025, in New Delhi In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).
This special gathering from over 10 international pharmacopoeias will discuss the important and critical policy matters that will ensure the quality and efficacy of drugs according to world standards.
Global Collaboration
The IMWP serves as an important platform for global collaboration on the various issues of standards for the quality of drugs.
The idea of this international meeting was the outcome of discussions at the 10th and 11th International Conferences of Drug Regulatory Authorities (ICDRA).
The IMWP was constituted to provide a formal platform for all WHO Member States’ pharmacopoeias to participate in various discussions about the standards of the quality of drugs.
What is a Pharmacopoeia?
As per WHO, a pharmacopoeia is a legally binding compendium having the standards and quality specifications for drugs used within a specific country or region.
These standards are important for ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of drugs available in the specific country for the public.
WHO has recognised, so far, about 60 pharmacopoeias, which include national, regional, subregional, and international bodies.
Role of the IPC
The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) plays a crucial role in protecting the health of the people in India.
The IPC establishes drug standards in the Indian Pharmacopoeia and publishes the same as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
Policymakers’ Forum:
IPC will host the second edition of the policymakers’ forum in concurrence with the IMWP.
This policymakers’ forum aims to increase the position of India in the world pharmaceutical sector, which was inaugurated last year in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Ministry of External Affairs.
The drug controllers from 15 countries have attended the inaugural edition.
Previous Edition
The previous edition of the global IMWP was jointly hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pharmacopoeia of the United Mexican States (FEUM) in 2023.
These international meetings play a vital role in harmonizing drug standards globally, which will improve the efficacy, safety, and quality of the drugs and build trust in consumers.
