IV Fluids
To ensure patient safety, the health department and government of West Bengal have banned the use of 10 intravenous fluids (IV fluids) in the medical colleges and hospitals across the state.
This drastic decision comes after the tragic death of a 22-year-old pregnant woman, Mamoni Ruidas, at Midnapore Medical College and the serious condition of four other women who have been treated at the same facility.
The Banned IV Fluids:
The list of prohibited IV fluids includes:
- Ringer Lactate
- Ringer Solution
- Dextrose Injection
- Ofloxacin
- Sodium Chloride Irrigation Solution
The Incident:
Mamoni Ruidas, a pregnant woman, tragically succumbed after being administered an IV fluid at Midnapore Medical College.
Four other women—Mampi Singh, Nasrin Khatun, Minara Bibi, and Rekha Sau—who were also undergoing treatment at the hospital are currently in critical condition.
Two of these women are on ventilators, and another one is in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the health care facility.
Hospital Response:
Hospital Superintendent Jayanta Raut stated that the affected women had been responding well to treatment before their condition deteriorated.
The hospital’s medical board visited the ICU and met with the families of the affected patients.
Government Investigation:
The West Bengal government has constituted a committee with 13 members to investigate the actual reason for the tragic death of the woman and the serious conditions of another four women.
The committee, headed by OSD (ME) Ashish Biswas, will thoroughly examine various aspects with respect to the medications, saline solutions, and hospital procedures to determine if any negligence occurred.
The committee has already visited the hospital and inspected the ICU unit.
