01/14Quick tips for asthma patients

Diwali, the festival of light and celebration of the victory of good over evil, is round the corner. But the celebration can be quite troublesome and daunting for people suffering from asthma. As per official data, kids between the age of 6 and 12 years of age are more susceptible to asthma attack during Diwali.

What is more troublesome is the changing weather – the onset of colder climates, smog combined with air, noise pollution and unhealthy foods – all of this makes it even worse for people suffering from asthma or other respiratory issues.

02/14Take your medication

Keep taking your medications as and when prescribed. Keep your inhaler handy if you are going out or are travelling.

03/14Take warm water

Every morning, drink a glass of warm water on an empty stomach and also gargle with that water. Wait for at least 30 minutes before you eat anything.

04/14Remember portion control

Enjoy every delicacy but in small portions. Eating too much oily and fried foods can worsen a sore throat, make you feel suffocated and give you some hard time.

05/14Have warm water before bed

Before you go to bed, drink a cup of warm water. This will aid digestion and help clear the pollutants from the respiratory system.

06/14Stay at home

Do not go to places that are highly polluted, like where kids are bursting crackers. In fact, cover your face with a handkerchief or if you can use a mask, even better.

07/14Take steam

If you feel uneasy often, try taking steam with plain water once or twice throughout the day. Make sure not to add anything to the water.

08/14Use a hot water bag

If you feel your breathing is heavy, use a hot water bag on your chest, back and stomach. This will definitely provide you with some relief.

09/14Have turmeric milk

Start having turmeric milk every day before you go to bed at least a week before Diwali. Turmeric milk is great for your immunity and helps clear your respiratory passage.

10/14Do not go for morning walk

Avoid going for walks during the early morning hours or late evenings. These are times when the smog descends lower in the atmosphere and leads to heavier breathing.

11/14Try doing some yoga

Yoga can help a great deal in managing asthma. Try performing yoga under expert supervision if you haven’t learned it before.

12/14Try black coffee

If you have a mild attack or feel uneasy, try drinking black coffee, ginger tea or green tea.

13/14Avoid alcohol and smoking

Smoking is injurious to health regardless of whether you are an asthmatic or not. Avoid smoking especially around Diwali as you are already inhaling too much smoke from the environment.

14/14Have jaggery

Jaggery has anti-allergic properties and it detoxes and relaxes the respiratory muscles. It clears your throat and helps you get rid of excess mucus.
