Acting tough against manufacturing and marketing of counterfeit drug in the state, the Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) has seized Rs. 50 lakh worth of fake drugs of Cuvicon tablets (posaconazole gastro-resistant tablets 100 mg) and Cuvicon 40 mg/ml oral suspension 105 ml. Both drugs are indicated for the treatment of mucorFmycosis or black fungus.
Based on a tip-off, the Gujarat FDCA officials conducted raids at multiple locations in Ahmedabad and Surat and seized fake drugs which were manufactured without a product license for the same.
“These drugs were manufactured by Astra Generics Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad, Telangana and marketed by Aspen Biopharma Labs Pvt. Ltd. They have been running a nationwide racket of this counterfeit drug. The counterfeit drug was also being sold in different areas in Ahmedabad and Surat,” stated Gujarat FDCA Commissioner Dr H G Koshia.
Dr Koshia added, “Since July 6, 2021, the laboratory test confirmed that all samples were fake. We have seized 1,440 tablets and 182 oral suspension bottles of the drug, worth Rs. 50 lakh.” An effective measure has been taken by the state government to provide quality medicines to the citizens of the state.
FDCA has now launched an investigation to find out as to how much medicines have been bought and sold in Gujarat by this manufacturer and to take strict action against all drug dealers and medical stores involved in the sales of these drugs.
Officials from the state “Food and Drugs Department” collected about a total of 150 tablets and 12 suspension bottles worth Rs. 30,12,600 and have seized the same at Paldi, Ahmedabad.
Naithik Mangaldas Shah, the manager of Vardhman Pharma, has been involved in such counterfeit drug scams in the past and he has been found guilty in the matter, stated Dr Koshia.
Dr Koshia added, “During the C-19 pandemic situation, officers of FDCA had caught various counterfeit drugs like remedisivir injection, tocilizumab injection, favipiravir tablets, amphotericin injection, etc and the FDCA has taken legal action against the wrongdoers.”
